5 Ways Neurodivergent Clients Can Prepare for Counselling
Starting counselling is a courageous step toward healing, growth, and self-understanding. At Harmony Haven, we support neurodivergent individuals—including those with ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities, and other cognitive differences—with care and compassion.
Whether it’s your first session or you’ve tried counselling before, here are five helpful ways to prepare, tailored specifically for neurodivergent clients.
1. Understand Your Goals
Before your first session, take a few minutes to reflect:
• What’s bringing you to counselling?
• Are there specific challenges you want support with (e.g., anxiety, masking, relationships)?
• How do you define progress?
Your goals don’t need to be perfect or fixed—they can evolve—but this gives your therapist a starting point that’s aligned with your needs.
2. Share Your Communication Preferences
Counselling isn’t one-size-fits-all. Let your therapist know what helps you feel heard and supported:
• Do you prefer direct or gentle communication?
• Are written reflections easier than verbal processing?
• Would visual tools (diagrams, notes, etc.) help you?
At Harmony Haven, we adapt our counselling sessions to fit you, not the other way around.
3. Set the Sensory Scene
If you’re sensitive to light, sound, or textures, consider preparing for your appointment with comfort in mind:
• Wear clothing that feels good on your skin.
• Bring fidgets, headphones, or a sensory item that helps you regulate.
• For virtual sessions, choose a familiar, calm environment.
Sensory needs are valid. Mention any concerns so we can adjust the space accordingly.
4. Ask Questions About the Process
Not knowing what to expect can create anxiety. It’s okay (and encouraged!) to ask:
• How long are the sessions?
• Will there be homework or journaling?
• What happens if I need a break?
We’ll always walk you through the process at your pace.
5. Know That All of You Is Welcome
Counselling is a safe space to unmask, speak freely, stim, cry, laugh—or not talk at all. You don’t need to perform or filter your experience. You’re not “too much” or “not enough.”
At Harmony Haven, we meet you with empathy, respect, and zero judgment.
You Deserve Support That Sees You
We believe that neurodivergent people deserve counselling that affirms their experience and celebrates their strengths. If you’re ready to take the next step, book a session or reach out to our team today.
