EMDR: Trauma Therapy
EMDR Therapy in Russell/Embrun and virtually across Ontario
If you’re looking for EMDR therapy in Embrun, Russell, Ottawa, or Eastern Ontario, you’re likely looking for more than information, you’re looking for relief. At Harmony Haven Counselling & Support Services, we offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to help people heal from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, distressing life experiences, and the lasting effects of overwhelming events. Whether your trauma happened recently or years ago, EMDR can help your brain process painful memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming in everyday life.
If you’ve been googling “EMDR near me,” “EMDR therapist Ontario,” “EMDR for anxiety,” “EMDR for PTSD,” or “trauma therapy in Embrun,” you’ve come to the right place.
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR helps the brain naturally reprocess difficult memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming. During EMDR therapy, your clinician uses bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements, alternating taps, or sounds to activate the brain’s natural information-processing system.
The goal is not to erase your memories.
The goal is to reduce the emotional distress attached to them so your nervous system no longer reacts as though the event is happening in the present.
What Can EMDR Help With?
Research has shown EMDR therapy can be effective for many concerns, including:
Trauma and PTSD
Complex trauma (C-PTSD)
Childhood trauma
Anxiety disorders
Panic attacks
Phobias
Grief and loss
Medical trauma
Motor vehicle accident trauma
First responder trauma
Military-related trauma
Workplace trauma
Low self-esteem linked to past experiences
Distressing memories that continue to affect daily life
Many people believe trauma only refers to catastrophic events. In reality, trauma can also result from emotional neglect, bullying, difficult relationships, chronic stress, or growing up in an environment where you didn’t feel emotionally or physically safe.
How Does EMDR Work?
When something overwhelming happens, the brain sometimes stores the memory differently than everyday experiences. Instead of becoming part of the past, the memory remains “stuck” alongside the emotions, body sensations, and beliefs experienced during the event. This is why certain sounds, smells, places, or situations can trigger anxiety, panic, or emotional distress years later. EMDR helps your brain complete the natural healing process that was interrupted during the traumatic experience. Clients often describe reaching a point where they remember what happened, but no longer feel consumed by it.
What Happens During an EMDR Session?
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase treatment model. Your therapist will begin by getting to know you, understanding your history, identifying your goals, and ensuring you have strong coping strategies before trauma processing begins. Preparation is an essential part of EMDR. When you’re ready, you’ll work collaboratively to identify memories or experiences that continue to affect your life today. Using bilateral stimulation, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that allows your brain to process those memories safely and effectively. Throughout the process, you remain in control. You can pause, ask questions, and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Is EMDR Effective?
Yes.
EMDR is recognized internationally as an evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD.
Many people experience meaningful improvements in symptoms such as:
Intrusive memories
Flashbacks
Nightmares
Hypervigilance
Panic
Anxiety
Emotional overwhelm
Negative self-beliefs
Avoidance
The number of sessions varies depending on your history, goals, and the complexity of your experiences.
Is EMDR Right for Me?
EMDR can be incredibly effective, but it isn’t the right fit for every person at every stage of healing. Before beginning EMDR, your therapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to determine whether EMDR is appropriate and ensure you have the emotional resources needed for successful treatment. Sometimes another therapeutic approach is recommended first to build stability before beginning trauma processing. There is never pressure to move faster than your nervous system is ready for.
